Abstract : This study aims to recognize personality disorders and relevant cognitive deformations among a sample group composed of persons arrested by Jeddah Police Departments against the background of ‘ethical, physical assault, financial’ offences. Additionally, it aims to recognize the differences at the levels of personality disorders and cognitive deformations between ordinary persons who had been subject to police arrest. To this aim, the study has employed the analytical descriptive approach. Sample group of the study was composed of 162 persons under arrest by Jeddah Police Departments, 54 persons for each three offences related to ‘physical, financial or ethical assault’ and 162 respondents (normal persons). Members of the sample group were subject to personality disorders test (designed by Askar, 2004) and a questionnaire to measure misconceptions and cognitive deformations (designed by Haron, 2017). Findings of the study revealed several significant results as follows: members who had been arrested on the background of ethical offences were suffering from moderate personality disorders incorporated in depressive personality disorders, followed by negative personality disorder (Passive-Aggressive), then Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (specifically known as OCPD). Recession Personality Disorder has been ranked number four. Border Personality Disorder comes next, then Paranoid Personality Disorder. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is ranked seven, followed by Schizoid Personality Disorder, then Schizotypal Personality Disorder, and finally Dependent Personality Disorder. The less common personality disorders among members of the sample group who were under arrest was the hysteric personality disorder. Findings of the study revealed also that those who were under arrest had suffering from minor cognitive disorders embodied in rebuke and self-flagellation, followed by exaggeration in objectives, levels and performance standards. Obligatory standards has come in the third rank, followed by intellectual petrification. Extremist thought has been ranked number fifth, then followed by exaggeration, passive nomination. Magnification comes in the eighth rank,Thought Reading is ranked ninth, followed by underestimation, over-passive generalization. Personification comes in the final rank. Additionally, findings of the study revealed statistically differences in personality disorders between those under arrest and ordinary respondents. These differences were in favor of those members under arrest in all personality disorders except for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Findings also revealed statistically differences in cognitive deformations between those members under arrest and ordinary respondents. These differences were in favor of those members under arrest in all dimensions of cognitive deformations – except for the dimensions of thought reading and exaggeration in objectives, levels and performance standards. Findings revealed unstatistically differences of personality disorders and cognitive deformations between those members under arrest according to the type of offence. Findings also revealed unstatistically differences in terms of personality disorders among those members under arrest, according to the education level. There were also statistically differences in cognitive deformations among those members under arrest, according to the education level, in favor of those members with less education level. Among the most important recommendations of the study are the following: • Awareness and alerting the community to the causes and risks of committing the crime, and working to spread this through seminars, scientific conferences, pamphlets and social media to reduce the commission of the crime. • Working out therapeutic counseling and development programs to help detainees reduce symptoms of personality disorder, as the results of the current study showed that they suffer from personality disorders and a high level of cognitive distortions. • Insight into the various bodies and institutions responsible for raising young people with interest in following up individuals in all psychological fields, especially the intellectual side. The most important proposals are as follows: • Conducting a study on levels of cognitive distortions and their relationship to aggressive behavior among detainees and inmates in correction and rehabilitation institutions.
